Last Updated: May 12, 2025

Welcome to tl;dr.am (the "Site"). We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy. If you have any questions or concerns about this privacy notice, or our practices with regards to your personal information, please contact us at privacy@tldr.am.

This privacy notice describes how we might use your information if you visit our website at https://tldr.am or otherwise engage with us.

In this privacy notice, if we refer to:

1. WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT?

Information automatically collected

In Short: Some information — such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address and/or browser and device characteristics — is collected automatically when you visit our Site, including through analytics services like Google Analytics.

We automatically collect certain information when you visit, use, or navigate the Site. This information does not reveal your specific identity (like your name or contact information) but may include device and usage information, such as your IP address, browser and device characteristics, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, device name, country, approximate location, information about how and when you use our Site (including pages visited, time spent on pages), and other technical information. This information is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of our Site, and for our internal analytics and reporting purposes.

Like many businesses, we also collect information through cookies and similar technologies. Specifically, we use **Google Analytics** to help us analyze how users use the Site. Google Analytics uses cookies to collect standard Internet log information and visitor behavior information in an anonymous form (depending on your Google Analytics settings, IP anonymization may be enabled).

2. HOW DO WE USE YOUR INFORMATION?

In Short: We process your information for purposes based on legitimate business interests, the fulfillment of our service to you, compliance with our legal obligations, and/or your consent.

We use personal information collected via our Site for a variety of business purposes described below.

3. WILL YOUR INFORMATION BE SHARED WITH ANYONE?

In Short: We only share information with your consent, to comply with laws, to provide you with services, to protect your rights, or to fulfill business obligations. Specifically regarding Google Analytics, data is collected by and shared with Google.

We may process or share your data that we hold based on the following legal basis:

More specifically, we may need to process your data or share your personal information in the following situations:

4. DO WE USE COOKIES AND OTHER TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES?

In Short: Yes, we use cookies and similar tracking technologies, including those set by Google Analytics, to collect and store information.

We use cookies and may use similar tracking technologies (like web beacons and pixels) to access or store information.

Specifically for **Google Analytics**, cookies are used to distinguish users, throttle request rates, and store information about user sessions and campaign data. The types of cookies used by Google Analytics may include `_ga`, `_gid`, `_gat`, and others. These cookies help us understand user interaction with our Site. For more detailed information on the cookies used by Google Analytics, please refer to the Google Analytics Cookie Usage documentation.

Our Site itself, built with Astro, uses `localStorage` for theme preference (light/dark mode), which is a browser storage mechanism and not a cookie that is transmitted with every request.

You can control and/or delete cookies as you wish – for details, see aboutcookies.org. You can delete all cookies that are already on your computer and you can set most browsers to prevent them from being placed. If you do this, however, you may have to manually adjust some preferences every time you visit a site and some services and functionalities may not work.

As mentioned in Section 3, you can also opt-out of Google Analytics tracking by using their browser add-on. We recommend implementing a cookie consent mechanism to allow users to control their preferences for non-essential cookies like those used by Google Analytics.

5. HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION?

In Short: We keep your information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this privacy notice unless otherwise required by law. Information collected by Google Analytics is subject to Google's data retention policies.

We will only keep your personal information that we directly control (such as email communications if you contact us) for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this privacy notice, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law (such as tax, accounting, or other legal requirements).

For data collected by Google Analytics, Google has its own data retention policies. You can typically configure data retention settings within your Google Analytics account. By default, user-level and event-level data may be stored for a period (e.g., 14 months, 26 months, etc.) before being automatically deleted.

6. HOW DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION SAFE?

In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.

We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process or that is processed on our behalf by service providers like our hosting platform. However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information.

7. DO WE COLLECT INFORMATION FROM MINORS?

In Short: We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 18 years of age.

Our Site is not intended for children under the age of 18 (or the applicable age of consent in your jurisdiction, e.g., 13 or 16). We do not knowingly solicit data from or market to children. By using the Site, you represent that you are at least 18 or that you are the parent or guardian of such a minor and consent to such minor dependent’s use of the Site. If we learn that personal information from users less than 18 years of age has been collected without verifiable parental consent, we will take reasonable measures to promptly delete such data from our records. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under age 18, please contact us at privacy@tldr.am.

8. WHAT ARE YOUR PRIVACY RIGHTS?

In Short: Depending on your location (e.g., EEA, UK, California, and other regions), you may have rights allowing you greater access to and control over your personal information.

In some regions, such as the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom (UK), California (USA), and other jurisdictions, you have certain rights under applicable data protection laws. These may include the right (i) to request access and obtain a copy of your personal information, (ii) to request rectification or erasure; (iii) to restrict the processing of your personal information; (iv) if applicable, to data portability; and (v) the right to withdraw consent at any time (if processing is based on consent). In certain circumstances, you may also have the right to object to the processing of your personal information.

Regarding data collected by Google Analytics, you can exercise control through Google's tools, including the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

If you wish to exercise any rights regarding information we may directly hold (such as from email correspondence), please contact us at privacy@tldr.am. We will consider and act upon any request in accordance with applicable data protection laws. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority about our collection and use of your personal information.

9. CONTROLS FOR DO-NOT-TRACK FEATURES

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, tl;dr.am does not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online.

10. DO WE MAKE UPDATES TO THIS NOTICE?

In Short: Yes, we will update this notice as necessary to stay compliant with relevant laws and reflect any changes in our practices.

We may update this privacy notice from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Last Updated" date at the top of this page, and the updated version will be effective as soon as it is accessible. If we make material changes to this privacy notice, we may notify you either by prominently posting a notice of such changes or by directly sending you a notification.
